Places of Pilgrimage. Svatá Hora in Příbram.

The first part of bachelor thesis deals with the origins of pilgrimage sites, their history, and journeys which pilgrims made across Europe and the Holy Land. This thesis discusses not only the preparations for these important journeys, but also the reasons why pilgrims set out on them, the meaning of a pilgrimage, what was taking place at the destination and what the journey back home looked like. The second part of this bachelor thesis introduces the pilgrimage site Svatá Hora in Příbram. It describes the origin of this place which is shrouded in legend, and presents eminent painters, stonemasons, stucco masons, sculptors and other personalities who substantially contributed to this important historical site. The work also does not omit the devastating fire due to which Svatá Hora had to be restored in 1978.

Saladin and Richard the Lion-Heart - what divides and what unites them

The third crusade could be likened to a chess game, taking place between the English King Richard I and the Muslim Sultan Saladin. The game that eventually ended in stalemate because neither Richard nor Saladin were able to gain an advantage over his opponent, which would lead to the final turn. The attitudes of both men were very different and this is obviously reflected in their ruling and military capabilities. The question which therefore arises is, how were Richard I and Saladin linked? The answer is simple. The King of England and the Muslim Sultan were on a larger scale linked with a right to the Holy Land and in the narrow scale to Jerusalem. If we try to understand Saladin and Richard we must focus on the period in which they lived, the situation in the Holy Land and minds of Christians and Muslims. This goal is also subject to the methodology of the work, descriptive method with contextual analysis and structure of the thesis were chosen.

Russian Palestine Diploma thesis Vojtěch Kolář Praha 2013 Abstract This diploma thesis entitled "The Russian Palestine" deals with activities of the Russian Orthodox Church and Russian diplomatic corps designed to help Russian pilgrims to the holy places in Palestine as well as local Orthodox believers in the Levant in the 19th and beginning of 20th century. These activities were accompanied by considerable tension not only between Russian activists in Palestine and in Russia, but also in their encounters with Greek hierarchy in Jerusalem and Constantinople as well as with Western diplomats and missionaries pursuing Catholic and Protestant interests in the same area. The aim of this thesis is to offer an insight into motivations, ways and results of their activities in Palestine and to call attention to the difficulties they were facing. This work is neither an apology nor a criticism of either of the instruments of Russian influence - the Russian Orthodox Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem (since 1847) and Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society (since 1882) respectively. Because of the broadness of the subject it was not always possible to follow strict historiographic methods. Picture of the Holy Land in Adomnán's De locis sanctis

The presented thesis deals with the work On the Holy Places (De locis sanctis) compiled by the monk and abbot Adomnán of Iona (624-704). Adomnán's work provides evidence of the unknown Gallic pilgrim Arculf about his journey to the Holy Land. Furthermore, Adomnán's text represents a complex historical source about the character of the early medieval pilgrimage during the second half of the 7th Century. Moreover, On the Holy Places offers extensive description and topography of the holy places associated with Jesus Christ's life, passion, and resurrection, hence oscillates between itinerary and hagiography. From the perspective of literary history, Adomnán's narrative has a deep-rooted background within the tradition, nevertheless, provides a significant number of innovations beyond the traditional views. The thesis contextualised Adomnán's text within the 7th-Century Iro-Scottish literary production, i.e. introduces Adomnán's new concept of pilgrimage narrative. Moreover, the text presents the first translation of On the Holy Places from Latin into Czech along with extensive commentary. The historical-critical method of Classic and Medieval studies, together with synchronous and diachronic analysis, was used. First crusade and the establishment of christian states in the east

The thesis is focused on the proclamation and the course of the First Crusade, which took place in 1096 - 1099.The aim of the work is to make reader acknowledged with progress and events which occurred during the journey Crusaders. Described are the origins and proclamation of the Crusade, political events, council of Clermont, how was the medieval man and journey of the common people and knight's current. Subsequent occupation of territories connected with emergence of Crusader States. There is also mentioned the view of modern man and how it persists to this days the influence of these expeditions.
